They are best known for the utilization of meat, wool and fur. The distinctive feature of Gotlanders is their beautiful gray and curly fur.<br \/>\nAs the Gotland sheep is a Nordic short-tailed sheep, they still have their original instincts. This means good maternal instincts, easy lemmings and high milk production. They are hardy and robust and thrive especially on large areas of land, making them perfect for landscaping, thereby actively contributing to high biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings brought sheep with them on their raids into Russia. They needed meat for the long and strenuous journeys. On these raids, the Vikings encountered new sheep breeds such as Karakul and Romanov, which today are known as Persian and Swakara fur types.
